There is also an oxygen bar located in Breckenridge where you can go for an oxygen treatment which seems to help many people. It is located at the second stop light on the South side of Main street below Alpine Burger. You can also have oxygen delivered to your cabin for a minimal charge which may make you feel better quicker. Is There Medical Care Nearby?:
Yes. We have a fabulous Nurse Practitioner right in Fairplay who can see you at her office in the Fairplay Pharmacy which is just South of the light on Highway 285 behind the Pizza Hut. Here office number in Fairplay is 719-836-0500. If you are in Breckenridge, she has an office just across the street from the City Mart by the gondola. It says Medcare. The office number there is 970-453-5311. Here name is Joann Kargul and I can personally recommend her as one of the best anywhere.
If you have a true emergency, there is a hospital in Frisco. Dial 911 for ambulance and emergency service.
Do I Need 4-Wheel Drive?:
We recommend either 4-wheel drive or chains in the winter from mid November through mid April. Many of the driveways are steep and can be very slick. All of the roads are county maintained and plowed. The driveways are plowed by individual snowplowers if there is more than 4 inches of snow on the driveway. The snow can become hard packed and slick so 4-wheel drive or chains may be necessary. If you cannot get 4-wheel drive then at least ask for All Wheel drive when renting a vehicle. Ask them if the vehicle has as separate 4-wheel drive control with on, high and low for best performance. Most SUV’s rented have this. Worst case get some chains for your personal vehicle. During the summer, you will not need 4-wheel drive unless you want to enjoy one of the many road tours through the high mountain passes which is worth the extra money spent on a 4-wheel drive vehicle. The roads are not paved but are reasonably smooth and regularly graded so that it is not necessary to gain access to the homes and cabins.
